Good Things are Happening at Breakthrough Test Prep

By Harriet Broder

Almost three years ago, I made one of the most consequential decisions of my life: I decided to sell Breakthrough Test Prep. On some (very tiny) level I had hoped I wouldn’t get any ‘takers’, but low and behold, I did! The buyer was Allen Grabo.

It wasn’t easy, but I was thrilled to find a buyer who I knew would do a fabulous job taking over. Not only did Allen have many years of teaching experience, he was able to pick up on how unique our test prep services were and was equally thrilled to learn them. I also knew he had the personality to connect with the students which was priority number 1. (As they say, “If they don’t like the messenger, the message will not be heard.”) Allen proved to be a quick study, and the rest is history.

For the past three years, I have been pretty much in the background – advising him when needed and teaching one or two students when the situation demanded.

He has now asked me to be a bit more involved to take off some of the load. How could I say no to getting back to doing some of what I loved about running the company? This is what I will be offering:

  • When necessary, I will be available to counsel parents and/or students on the better test to showcase the students’ skill sets.

  • I will also be available to address the need (or not) for the student to take the SAT or ACT, based upon student level and goals.

  • I will be a resource to go over prior scores to address areas that need improvement as well as how those weaker areas will be addressed. A realistic score goal will also be discussed.

  • I will take VERY FEW ACT and SSAT prep students. (Call for more info.)

  • More often than not, I will be teaching effective reading training in our small groups or one-on-one. (Unlike other test prep programs, efffective reading is intrinsic to ALL of our test preparation.)

  • I will be writing weekly informative newsletters that will be invaluable to parents and students. Areas of focus will include:

    • the content differences between the ACT and SAT

    • why some students do poorly on standardized exams

    • do schools that are test optional really mean it

    • why what is learned in our programs supercede the test

    • how a higher test score can ensure scholarship monies

    • what kind of scores are various levels of schools looking for

    • what other factors are important to admissions officers

      and much more!

So glad to be back and looking forward to our connecting soon!
